AI visibility tools: track and improve your presence in AI answers
A GEO tool (generative engine optimization), also called an AI visibility tool, measures where a brand stands in the answers of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI answers (AI Overviews and AI Mode), and helps improve it. We selected and rated 15 of them, from specialized platforms to SEO suites that have added a module dedicated to AI. Filter by use and by price to compare them.

What is GEO?
SEO targets the classic search engine results, a list of links. GEO targets something else: getting cited in the answer an AI writes itself. When a customer asks an assistant which software to pick or which agency to call, the answer names a few brands and a few sources. A brand missing from that answer is invisible to that customer.
People sometimes say “GEO SEO,” because the two overlap: AI relies partly on web pages, and a site that ranks well has a better chance of being read and cited. GEO still adds its own metrics, which classic SEO tools don't provide.
How does a GEO tool work?
The method is almost always the same. You define the questions your customers ask (the “prompts”); the tool asks them at regular intervals, often daily, to the assistants it tracks; then it records, answer after answer, whether the brand shows up, where it sits in the list, how it's described, who is overshadowing it and which pages fed the answer.
The best tools go beyond reporting: AthenaHQ and Qwairy turn the analysis into action items, AirOps produces the content meant to improve the brand's presence, and Scrunch AI and the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit also check that AI crawlers can read the site.
That check is worth doing before you even choose a tool: many sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot without knowing it, through a line in their robots.txt, a firewall or their CDN's default setting. A site that AI crawlers can't read will only be cited secondhand, whatever tracking tool you use.
AI answers change from one run to the next: a GEO tool's numbers should be read as trends over several weeks rather than as exact positions.
The three types of GEO tools
- Specialized tracking platforms: Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch AI, AthenaHQ, Qwairy and Meteoria are built for this single purpose, with the most detailed tracking.
- SEO suite modules: Ahrefs Brand Radar, the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and SE Ranking add AI visibility to tools many teams already use for SEO.
- Content for AI: AirOps writes and updates the pages that need to be cited, and Surfer SEO helps optimize copy for search engines and AI alike.
How to choose a GEO tool
The assistants tracked. Make sure the tool queries the ones your customers use: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude or Google's AI answers. Not all tools cover them all, and some plans cap how many you get.
How the questions are asked. Tools don't all ask their questions the same way: some go through the models' APIs, others through the interface users actually see, and the answers differ (web search on or off, location, memory). Also check that the questions are asked in your customers' language and from their country: the brands cited change with language and location, and tracking run from another country or in another language tells you nothing about what your customers see.
The number of questions tracked. With most tools, plans differ mainly by the number of prompts or credits. List the questions that really matter to your business before picking a plan.
Your current stack. If you already subscribe to Semrush or Ahrefs, their AI module is the simplest starting point, once you've checked whether it's included in your plan or billed as an add-on: it rarely is included. A specialized platform makes sense once GEO becomes something you track every week.
The budget. No GEO tool in this selection is completely free, and most are paid. Use the trials and limited free plans to test on your own questions before committing.
If you first want to know where your brand stands in assistants' answers, our GEO agency runs an initial assessment before recommending a tool.
Two free metrics are already available in the tools you use. GA4 records visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or copilot.microsoft.com, grouped by default under referral traffic: a custom channel group is enough to isolate them. Search Console, for its part, counts appearances in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode in its impressions and clicks, without letting you separate them from classic results.
