SE Ranking: track your rankings and audit your site without paying top dollar

Good tool

SE Ranking is an online SEO platform that monitors, day after day, where a site stands in Google and in answer engines such as ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Around this rank tracking, which remains its strong suit, it brings together a technical audit, a keyword database, link and competitor analysis, and reports ready to send to clients. In the SEO suite market, it holds the position of the affordable alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs, very popular with agencies and freelancers.

What is SE Ranking?

Everything starts with a project: you enter your site, your competitors, the list of keywords to track, and the target country, city and device. Every day, SE Ranking queries Google, Bing or YouTube the way a searcher would and records rankings in the top hundred results, keeping a copy of the results page so you can double-check. The same project launches a crawler that goes through the site looking for technical errors, and a more recent module watches the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode to see whether the brand is mentioned. To study any other domain, the tool draws on its own databases: about 4.2 billion keywords spread across nearly 190 countries, with search volumes calculated from Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends, then reworked by its algorithms.

SE Ranking’s first tool came out in 2013. The company, which has never been publicly listed, is now operated by SER Acquisition Inc., with registered addresses in London and Delaware, and employs more than 150 people based mainly in Kyiv, Wroclaw and Warsaw. The American fund Camber Partners announced at the end of 2021 that it had invested in the company. In 2024, SE Ranking claimed more than one million users.

What is SE Ranking used for?

  • Track your rankings every day

in Google, Bing or YouTube, on desktop and mobile, down to the level of a city or a ZIP code.

  • Audit your site

a crawler flags broken pages, redirects, missing tags and slow pages.

  • Find keywords

estimated volumes, difficulty and suggestions drawn from a database of several billion queries.

  • Keep an eye on your competitors

the queries they rank for, their estimated traffic and their best-performing pages.

  • Check your backlinks

the links pointing to your site, and the ones your competitors benefit from.

  • Measure your presence in AI answers

See when ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews mention your brand, with the links they provide and the competitors named alongside you.

  • Deliver reports to your clients

scheduled reports, white-labeled with the dedicated agency add-on.

SE Ranking review

Good tool

Rank tracking remains the reason people choose SE Ranking, and it is where the tool is most convincing. Daily checks, city-level targeting, separate mobile and desktop data, a copy of every results page to verify a questionable number: for a consultant who has to report every month, everything is designed to move fast. The interface is fairly approachable for beginners, even if a seasoned Semrush user will need a little time to find their bearings, all the more so since it changes often.

Price does the rest. For comparable features, the subscription costs significantly less than Semrush or Ahrefs, and the entry plan already includes ten projects, two thousand keywords tracked daily, the site audit, the API and a first level of AI tracking. For an agency monitoring dozens of client sites, the difference quickly adds up to hundreds of dollars a month. You do need to know what you are buying, though: search volumes and competitor traffic are estimates, drawn from a database that is shallower than those of the two leaders, especially in secondary markets and for niche queries. For your own numbers, Google Search Console remains the only exact source.

Reliability also raises questions. A ranking check sometimes fails, a daily analysis comes back incomplete, a scheduled report doesn’t go out or a keyword is wrongly flagged as dropped from the index. In September 2025, a change on Google’s side skewed the rankings of most keywords for a week, as SE Ranking itself acknowledged: for a tool whose core business is tracking, that hiccup weighs heavily. And when an incident drags on, getting a human on the line rather than an automated reply, and then some form of compensation, takes patience.

Finally, the offer changes often: renamed plans, rising prices, AI features that arrive late or cost extra. Reread the price list before each renewal, especially on an annual plan.

Strengths

  • Accurate, verifiable rank tracking, down to city level, on mobile and desktop alike.
  • A price well below that of the big suites, with generous limits from the first plan.
  • An approachable interface, with automated reports that save time.
  • The API, an MCP server and a first level of AI tracking included at no extra cost.
  • Scheduled reports and white-labeling built for agencies.

Weaknesses

  • Keyword and link databases shallower than those of Semrush or Ahrefs, especially outside the major markets.
  • Estimated volumes and traffic, to be cross-checked with Search Console.
  • Ranking checks, analyses or reports that sometimes fail, including during incidents lasting several days.
  • Human support that is hard to reach when a problem drags on.
  • An offer and an interface that change often, rising prices and a cascade of paid add-ons (AI, white label, users).
  • No lasting free version beyond the 14-day trial.

Is SE Ranking worth it?

Yes, if you are a consultant, a small agency or the SEO lead at a small or midsize business, and your day-to-day work is tracking rankings, auditing sites and sending reports. SE Ranking does that job for a fraction of the leaders’ price, and the trial with no credit card lets you check it on your own projects before paying.

Not necessarily, if you mainly need to dig deep into markets, Google Ads or your competitors’ links: Semrush and Ahrefs have richer databases, for a much bigger budget. Conversely, for a single site, the free Google Search Console and a lighter tool such as Mangools or Ubersuggest are often enough. Those who only want rank tracking will also find specialists, such as Advanced Web Ranking or SERPWatcher, and, in France, Monitorank or Myposeo, both well established among agencies.

How much does SE Ranking cost?

The subscription starts at $129 a month for the Core plan and climbs to $279 for Growth, before an Enterprise offer on quote. Paying yearly cuts the bill by 20%. There is no lasting free plan, only a 14-day trial.

FAQ

Answers to questions about SE Ranking

Is SE Ranking free?

No. There is no permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial with no credit card and a few small tools freely available on the site, such as a rank checker limited to a few searches a day.

SE Ranking or Semrush?

Semrush has larger databases, especially for advertising and market analysis, but costs noticeably more. SE Ranking covers the essentials of SEO, rank tracking and site audits in particular, for a tighter budget.

Are the rankings shown by SE Ranking reliable?

They are checked every day directly in the search results, with a viewable copy of the page. They give an accurate picture for a given location and device, but Google results vary from one searcher to another and a check can occasionally fail.

Does SE Ranking track visibility in ChatGPT?

Yes. The Core and Growth plans monitor the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode for 25 prompts a day. Broader tracking requires SE Visible, sold separately.
