Surfer SEO: optimize your content for Google and AI search
Good tool
Surfer SEO helps you write or rework an article so it holds up against the pages already at the top of Google. You enter a query, the tool combs through the top results and turns them into a roadmap: the terms and entities to use, the target length, the heading structure, the questions to cover. A score out of 100 changes as you write, right in the editor or in Google Docs and WordPress. Widely used by content writers, agencies and content teams, it is one of the go-to tools for semantic optimization, and it now extends to tracking how brands show up in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
What is Surfer SEO?
The heart of Surfer is its content editor. For each target query, it analyzes the twenty top-ranking pages and compares your draft with what they have in common: primary and secondary keywords, related terms, the number of headings and paragraphs, length, images, metadata. Each recommendation turns green once it’s met, and the Content Score, from 0 to 100, sums it all up. Today that score combines two parts, one for traditional SEO and the other for AI answer engines, which looks in particular at whether the text answers the search intent right away and whether it provides specific facts. Around the editor, Surfer has added an AI writing assistant (Surfy), a detector and “humanizer” for AI-generated text, a plagiarism checker, a topical map to plan article clusters, an audit of published pages that flags ranking drops and cannibalization, and the AI Tracker, which queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers to measure a brand’s place in their responses.
Surfer was founded in 2017 in Wrocław, Poland. Its co-founders include brothers Lucjan and Michał Suski; Lucjan is still CEO. Independent for a long time, the company joined the French group Positive, formerly Sarbacane, which also owns Iconosquare and noCRM, in October 2025; the amount was not disclosed. At the time, the service claimed about 12,000 customers. The site recently moved from surferseo.com to surfer.ai and now presents itself as an AI visibility platform, a sign of a deliberate turn toward GEO.

Surfer SEO review
Good tool
Surfer popularized a simple method: look at what the pages that succeed on a query are doing and use them as a template. For a writer, the effect is immediate. The editor reminds you of the points you forgot, flags a text that is too short or too light on subheadings, and turns a vague instruction (“write an SEO article about…”) into a precise brief. It’s especially useful for briefing writers, keeping a team’s output consistent or refreshing old articles that are slipping.
The Content Score should be read for what it is. It measures how closely a text resembles the pages that already rank, not its ability to rank: a 90 doesn’t replace site authority, links or genuine added value. Trying to tick every box quickly leads to keyword-stuffed text, modeled on competitors and without a point of view. It works better as a checklist than as a target.
The setting that changes everything happens before you write: choosing which competing pages Surfer keeps in its analysis. Leaving an encyclopedia, a marketplace, a forum or a video in the selection skews the recommended length and terms, since the template is an average of those pages. Keeping only content comparable to yours is the first thing to do on every brief.
Each overhaul has pushed the price up, and there is no longer a free plan. For a blogger or a small business publishing a few articles a month, the bill is steep, especially since general-purpose AI assistants now handle part of the writing work. The tool pays for itself mainly at agencies and teams producing at volume.
Billing also has its traps. The seven-day trial requires a credit card and turns into a subscription on its own, annual plans are paid up front and unused credits don’t roll over. Note the trial end date and turn off renewal if you’re not convinced.
Strengths
- Clear recommendations, drawn from the pages that actually rank for the query.
- An easy-to-learn editor, also usable inside Google Docs and WordPress.
- An excellent briefing tool for guiding writers and keeping output consistent.
- All languages analyzed, including English.
- AI visibility tracking included from the Standard plan, limited to ChatGPT at that level and extended to all engines from Pro.
Weaknesses
- No lasting free plan, and prices that have risen over the years.
- A score that easily pushes you toward over-optimization and copycat content.
- A good score doesn’t guarantee a good ranking: site authority and links matter just as much.
- A trial that requires a credit card and rolls over automatically into a paid subscription.
- AI writing features that matter less next to general-purpose assistants.
Is Surfer SEO worth it?
Yes, if your team publishes a lot, at an agency, a web publisher or in a marketing department, and you want a shared framework to brief, write and check every article before it goes live. It’s just as useful for bringing a back catalog of older articles that are losing rankings back up to standard.
Not necessarily, if you write a few articles a month for your own site. NeuronWriter covers most semantic optimization needs for less, and in France YourText.Guru and 1.fr are well established; Clearscope and Frase play in the same league as Surfer. If all you need is to track your brand in AI answers, specialized tools such as Peec AI exist, and Semrush or SE Ranking also include that tracking alongside their traditional SEO features.
How much does Surfer SEO cost?
Surfer is sold by subscription only, starting at $59 a month, or $49 a month when you pay for the year up front. The differences between plans mostly come down to the number of optimized documents, tracked pages, prompts sent to AI engines and included seats. A separate plan, AI Search Analytics, offers only AI visibility tracking.
| Plan | Per month | Per month, billed yearly | Included | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $59 | $49 | 120 documents, 10 tracked pages, 1 seat, no AI tracking | Trying the tool, a single writer |
| Standard | $119 | $99 | 360 documents, 50 tracked pages, 25 AI prompts (ChatGPT, updated weekly), 3 seats | Small content team, one site |
| Pro | $219 | $182 | 360 documents, 200 tracked pages, 50 daily AI prompts on all engines, 5 seats, 5 brands | Agencies and teams managing several sites |
| Peace of Mind | $359 | $299 | Unlimited documents (fair use), 500 tracked pages, 100 AI prompts, 10 seats, API | Large-scale production |
| AI Search Analytics | $95 | $82 | AI visibility tracking only: 50 daily prompts, 5 brands, 5 seats | Brands that only want to monitor AI answers |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Custom limits, SSO, white label, onboarding support | Enterprise accounts | |

FAQ
Answers to questions about Surfer SEO

No. Surfer SEO can only be tried for seven days, on the Pro plan and with a credit card, since there is no free plan. A few side tools remain free, such as the Keyword Surfer extension and the AI content detector.
Does Surfer SEO work in languages other than English?
Yes. Surfer says its analysis works in every language, French included.
Does a good Content Score guarantee a good Google ranking?
No. The score measures how closely your text resembles the pages that already rank well for the query. Site authority, the links it earns and the real quality of the content weigh just as much in rankings.
Who is behind Surfer SEO?
Surfer was founded in 2017 in Wrocław, Poland, by Lucjan and Michał Suski, among others. Since October 2025 it has belonged to the French group Positive.
How do I avoid being charged after the trial?
The trial doesn’t stop on its own: you have to cancel before the 7 days are up from your account’s billing settings, or the plan you chose is charged automatically.
