Carrd: launch a one-page website for a few dollars a year

Good tool

A profile page for a freelancer, a waitlist page before a product launch, a single link to drop into your Instagram bio: Carrd is built to make that kind of one-page site, with no code, starting from a template or a blank page. The result adapts to mobile on its own and can include a signup form, a payment button or your own domain name. Next to the big website builders, it is the minimalist, very cheap tool you pick when one page is all you need.

What is Carrd?

You don’t need an account to get started: on Carrd, you pick a starting point from several dozen templates, or a blank page, and edit the design directly in the browser, even on your phone. The page is built by stacking elements (text, images, buttons, galleries, videos, icons, forms), which you can group into sections to create the feel of several pages. You are only asked to sign up when you publish. The free site then appears on a carrd.co subdomain, with a “Made with Carrd” credit in the footer. The Pro plans unlock the rest: a custom domain with an SSL certificate, forms connected to Mailchimp, Brevo or Kit, Stripe, PayPal or Gumroad widgets, visitor analytics and, on the most complete plan, password protection, redirects and site downloads.

Carrd is the work of one person, a developer from Nashville, Tennessee, who goes by AJ (@ajlkn) and first became known for HTML5 UP, a library of free website templates. He started working on the project in early 2015 and launched it on Twitter on March 7, 2016; a few days later, a feature on Product Hunt brought in thousands of users. The service is now run by Carrd Inc., and its changelog shows regular updates.

Carrd review

Good tool

Carrd sticks to one-page sites, and that is exactly what makes it good. When you need to put a digital business card, a launch page or a light portfolio online, you get a clean, fast site that reads well on a phone in an hour, often less, without ever touching code. The editor is easy to learn, the templates show good taste, and the integrations cover most of what a page like this needs to do: collect email addresses, send people to a payment, show a video.

Price is the other big selling point. Nine dollars a year to remove the Carrd branding, nineteen to use your own domain name and forms: that is in a different league from the monthly subscriptions of general-purpose website builders. The free version is enough to test an idea or publish a personal page, as long as you accept the carrd.co address and the footer credit.

The project does have to fit on a single page, though. Carrd has no blog, no store with a cart and no real multi-page structure, and its SEO features cover only the basics: it is not the tool for building a lasting presence on Google or a site that will grow. The interface is available only in English.

The service itself is run by a small company. Purchases are generally not refunded, sites can be suspended for content deemed to break the rules without the explanation always being clear, and it is wise to get into the habit of saving often so you don’t lose work in progress.

Strengths

  • You can get going right away, with no code, on a computer or a phone.
  • Polished templates and mobile-friendly pages with no extra setup.
  • A tiny yearly price, starting at $9 to remove the Carrd branding.
  • A lasting free plan, with three sites you can publish.
  • Useful integrations: email marketing tools, Stripe, PayPal, Zapier, analytics.

Weaknesses

  • One page per site: no blog, no store with a cart, no site structure.
  • SEO is limited by design: you can set the title, description and share image, but a single URL can only target one topic on Google.
  • No custom domain on the first paid plan.
  • Refunds are generally refused, and suspensions are sometimes poorly explained.
  • The interface is available in English only.

Is Carrd worth it?

Yes, if you need a single, well-presented page: a creator or freelancer profile, a launch page that collects signups, an event page, a single link for your social media. For that kind of project, it is hard to find a better ratio between result and price, and the Pro Standard plan at $19 a year covers most needs.

Not necessarily, if your site needs several pages, a blog or a product catalog, or has to bring in traffic from Google. Wix, Squarespace or Framer give you much more room, Shopify remains the natural choice for selling online, and WordPress suits a site that is meant to grow. For a simple page without a domain name, Google Sites is free, and so are “link in bio” tools if all you want is to gather your links in one place.

How much does Carrd cost?

Carrd has no monthly subscription: everything is paid by the year, at $9 a year for Pro Lite, $19 for Pro Standard and $49 for Pro Plus, which works out to less than $5 a month even for the most complete plan. The free version lets you publish three sites with no time limit.

  • Prices are published only in dollars and only per year; the monthly amounts in the table are calculated equivalents (yearly price divided by twelve).
  • Each plan comes in versions with more sites: Pro Lite up to 25 sites ($29 a year), Pro Standard and Pro Plus up to 1,000 sites ($599 and $999 a year).
  • 7-day free trial, with no credit card, giving access to some Pro features, including the custom domain and forms.
  • Payment by PayPal or credit card, with automatic renewal or a one-time payment, your choice.
  • Purchases are generally not refunded; downgrading to a lower plan gives you a prorated credit on your account.

FAQ

Answers to questions about Carrd

Is Carrd free?

Yes, for three sites per account, with no time limit. They are published on a carrd.co address with a “Made with Carrd” credit. To remove the branding, you need a Pro plan, starting at $9 a year.

Can you use your own domain name with Carrd?

Yes, starting with the Pro Standard plan at $19 a year, with an SSL certificate included. The Pro Lite plan does not allow it. The domain name itself is bought separately, from a registrar.

Can you build a multi-page website with Carrd?

Not really. Carrd is designed for one-page sites, which you can split into several sections. For a site with several pages, a blog or a store, a general-purpose website builder is a better fit.

Can you sell online with Carrd?

For a few products or a service, yes, thanks to Stripe, PayPal or Gumroad buttons (Pro Standard) and payment forms (Pro Plus). There is no catalog, cart or inventory management, though.
