Wix: build your website without code, hosting and domain included

Good tool

Wix lets you build a website without writing a single line of code: you start from a template or a description given to its AI assistant, then drag text, images and buttons around until the page looks the way you want. Hosting, security and updates are handled by the platform, which adds an online store, appointment booking or payments depending on the plan. Tradespeople, freelancers, nonprofits and small retailers have made it one of the most widely used website builders in the world.

What is Wix?

Unlike a CMS you install with a web host, Wix is a closed online service: the site is built, hosted and served by Wix, and everything is managed from the browser. The classic editor lets you place every element freely on the page, down to the pixel, starting from more than 900 templates. Since January 2026, the brand has been promoting Wix Harmony, which generates a first draft of the site from a conversation with an AI before handing it over to the visual editor for fine-tuning. Features that go beyond a simple business site (store, bookings, blog, marketing tools) are added as apps, and developers can drop in JavaScript with Velo. Agencies get a separate environment, Wix Studio, with its own pricing.

On SEO, Wix has closed most of its gap: titles and descriptions can be set page by page, 301 redirects, the sitemap, the robots.txt file and structured data are available from the dashboard, and the site connects to Search Console in a few clicks. What stays out of reach is everything to do with the server and the rendered code: you choose neither the hosting nor how pages are built, and performance depends on the platform’s choices. For a business website, that’s enough; for a media site or a catalog that lives off search traffic, it’s a ceiling.

The company, Wix.com Ltd., was founded in Tel Aviv in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami, its current CEO, his brother Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan. Listed on Nasdaq since November 2013, it posted $1.99 billion in revenue in 2025 and, at the end of 2025, reported more than 304 million registered users and 6.11 million premium subscriptions. In 2025, it acquired Base44, a tool that builds apps from a simple description. As of October 2026, Wix powered a little over 4% of all websites.

Wix review

Good tool

Wix delivers on its promise for anyone who wants a clean website in a few evenings, without touching a server or a line of code. It’s quick to learn, the templates are polished, the mobile version keeps up, and everything is in one place: domain, hosting, forms, bookings, a small store. Restaurant, practice, photographer, sports club or nonprofit: that is exactly the audience the tool was designed for, and it serves them well.

A Wix site only lives at Wix, and it’s better to know that before you start. You can’t export it to host it elsewhere, and you can’t switch templates once the site is created, except by starting a new site from scratch. The day you want to leave, you can take your images and some data with you, but the pages have to be rebuilt. For a project that is meant to grow, get more complex or be handed over to a developer, that is a real obstacle. Very content-heavy sites can also become cumbersome to edit.

The bill climbs as soon as you want to sell online, and plans are paid upfront for the year. Renewal, above all, deserves attention. The annual plan renews automatically up to three weeks before it expires, at the standard rate even if it was bought on sale, and the free domain is free for the first year only. It’s best to put the date in your calendar and check your renewal settings, because reaching a human agent for a refund after the fact is far from easy.

Strengths

  • Quick to learn, with no technical skills required.
  • An all-in-one: hosting, security, domain and updates handled by Wix.
  • Lots of layout freedom and polished templates.
  • Store, bookings and payments available with no plugin to install.
  • A free plan with no credit card to try it out, and 14 days to get a refund.

Weaknesses

  • A site locked in at Wix: no way to export it to another host.
  • A template you can’t change once the site is created.
  • Automatic renewal up to three weeks before expiry, at the standard rate.
  • A cost that climbs quickly as soon as you want to sell online.
  • A free plan limited to a wixsite.com address, with Wix ads.

Is Wix worth it?

Yes, if you are a freelancer, retailer, tradesperson or nonprofit manager and want a business website, a few bookings or a small store, without relying on a contractor for every change. You are paying for peace of mind: nothing to install, nothing to maintain.

Not necessarily, if your site needs to be able to change hosts, take custom development or grow significantly. WordPress, installed with the host of your choice, lets you leave with your site and your data, at the cost of regular maintenance. For a store that is the heart of the business, Shopify is built for selling. Squarespace plays on the same field as Wix, with more structured templates, and Webflow appeals to designers who want fine control over the result.

And if the site has to support a business that depends on search traffic, a custom-built business website, like the ones we design, remains the most durable option.

How much does Wix cost?

Apart from the free plan, Wix lists its plans as annual subscriptions, paid in full at purchase and shown here as a monthly price. Expect $17 a month for a site with no online sales, $29 to accept payments and up to $159 for the most complete plan. US prices exclude tax.

FAQ

Answers to questions about Wix

Is Wix free?

You can build and publish a site without paying, but it stays on a wixsite.com address, shows Wix ads and is limited to 500 MB of storage. A custom domain requires a paid plan.

Can I move a Wix site to another host?

No. Wix doesn’t let you export a site to host it elsewhere: you can take your images and some data, but the pages have to be rebuilt on the new platform.

Can I switch templates along the way?

Not on an existing site. You have to create a new site from another template, then move your plan and domain over to it; the content doesn’t follow automatically.

How do I avoid an unwanted renewal?

Turn off automatic renewal in the Premium Subscriptions section of your account, once the first 14 days have passed (before that, the plan is canceled right away). The charge can come up to three weeks before the renewal date.

Who owns Wix?

Wix.com Ltd., an Israeli company founded in 2006 and based in Tel Aviv, listed on Nasdaq since 2013.
