Rank Math: the plugin that takes care of SEO on a WordPress site
Reference
Rank Math is the plugin many people install first on a new WordPress site to handle its SEO. It adds a panel under every post to set the title and meta description shown in Google, choose a focus keyword and follow an optimization score, then takes care, behind the scenes, of the sitemap, structured data, redirects and the connection to Google Search Console. With more than four million sites running it, it forms, together with Yoast SEO, the top pair of SEO plugins for WordPress.
What is Rank Math?
Rank Math installs from the WordPress dashboard like any other plugin, then a setup wizard walks through the basic settings and offers a one-click import of those from Yoast SEO, All in One SEO or SEOPress. The plugin is split into modules you can switch on or off: XML sitemap, structured data (Schema), redirects and 404 monitoring, local SEO, WooCommerce, images, breadcrumbs, role management. In the editor, each page gets a focus keyword and a score out of 100, calculated from some thirty checks: keyword in the title, content length, links, image attributes. Traffic and ranking figures, for their part, don’t come from an in-house database: they are read from Google Search Console and Google Analytics, connected through their APIs.
The plugin arrived in the official WordPress directory in November 2018, originally developed by the team at MyThemeShop, a WordPress theme company. It is now run by a small Indian company based in Gurugram, near New Delhi, co-founded by Bhanu Ahluwalia, Nimit Kashyap and Suraj Vibhute, with a team of at least 27 people, fully remote. Its growth has been fast: more than four million active installations, and 16% of the nearly 400 SEOs surveyed by the agency Aira for its 2024 technical SEO report say they use it. In recent years, the company has mainly been pushing its artificial intelligence offering, Content AI, sold on top of the plugin.

Rank Math review
Reference
Rank Math owes its place among WordPress SEO plugins first of all to its free version. Structured data, redirects, 404 monitoring, sitemap, import from Yoast: what others keep for their paid version is free here. A blog or a small WooCommerce store can get by with it for years. The interface is clear, the modular design lets you turn on only what you need, and updates keep coming.
The content score, on the other hand, should be taken for what it is: a list of mechanical checks, not a judgment on the quality of a piece of writing. Putting the keyword in the first paragraph or hitting a word count doesn’t make a page rank, and chasing 100/100 quickly leads to over-optimization. Especially since some of the criteria point to Content AI, the company’s paid artificial intelligence offering. Treat the score as a reminder; the judgment on the text is still yours.
What grates more is the sales pressure. Notifications in the admin, sale banners, Content AI trials that turn into subscriptions unless canceled in time: the plugin often reminds you that a paid version exists. As for the PRO plans, they are inexpensive and mainly add rank tracking, Google data kept for longer and more advanced schema types; since their data comes from Search Console, it is reliable but limited to your own site.
That richness also has a cost. The many settings sometimes confuse beginners, some options only reveal themselves when you read the documentation, and occasional conflicts with page builders or other plugins can’t be ruled out. None of these flaws is a deal-breaker, but a site already loaded with plugins deserves a test on a staging copy before going live.
Strengths
- A very rich free version that is enough for most sites.
- Structured data, redirects and 404 monitoring built in, with no extra plugin.
- A clear interface and modules you can turn on one by one.
- A one-click import from Yoast SEO, All in One SEO or SEOPress, to be followed by a check of the indexing settings and title templates before you deactivate the old plugin.
- Inexpensive PRO plans, with unlimited personal sites.
- Frequent updates and a plugin under active development.
Weaknesses
- A mechanical content score that encourages over-optimization.
- Heavy-handed sales pressure: notifications, sales, AI offers.
- Content AI sold separately, with trials that become paid unless canceled.
- Lots of settings, sometimes confusing for a beginner, and some options poorly explained in the interface.
- Occasional conflicts with page builders or other plugins.
- WordPress only, and billed yearly only.
Is Rank Math worth it?
Yes, if your site runs on WordPress and needs an SEO plugin: the free version handles most technical issues in a few minutes, without paying anything. The PRO plan makes sense when you want to track your rankings and pages from inside WordPress, and Business as soon as you manage client sites.
Not necessarily, if you expect the plugin to tell you what to write or who your competitors are: it optimizes your pages, it doesn’t analyze the market or backlinks. For that, you need a tool like Semrush, SE Ranking or Ahrefs. And if your site doesn’t run on WordPress, it isn’t for you.
Between Rank Math and Yoast SEO, the choice mostly comes down to taste: Rank Math gives you more for free, Yoast stays more understated and more established. All in One SEO and SEOPress are other serious options. For your real numbers, Google Search Console remains the source, and the plugin simply relays it.
How much does Rank Math cost?
For the most part, Rank Math costs nothing: the free plugin is downloaded from the WordPress directory, with no time limit and no limit on the number of sites. The paid plans add rank tracking, advanced features and client site management. They are billed yearly only, before tax: the monthly price shown therefore corresponds to an annual commitment, from $107.88 a year for PRO to $779.88 for Agency.
| Plan | Per month | Per month, billed yearly | Included | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | — | Core SEO modules, Google data kept for 90 days | Most websites |
| PRO | — | $8.99 | Unlimited personal sites, 500 tracked keywords | Bloggers, freelancers, site owners |
| Business | — | $27.99 | 100 client sites, 10,000 tracked keywords | Freelancers and small agencies |
| Agency | — | $64.99 | 500 client sites, 50,000 tracked keywords | Agencies managing many sites |

- Regular prices, which are also the renewal prices. The company regularly runs sales that sharply cut the first-year price: in early November 2026, PRO was offered at $5.59 a month.
- The subscription renews automatically every year; an email warns you seven days before the due date.
- Refund within 30 days for a first purchase, not for a renewal.
- The PRO plan only covers sites you own: client sites require Business or Agency.
- A bundle with the WP Rocket caching plugin (for one site) costs $13.99 a month, billed yearly.
- Content AI, the artificial intelligence offering, costs extra: from $6.99 to $18.99 a month, billed yearly. Paid plans include a trial of it, which becomes paid unless canceled.
FAQ
Answers to questions about Rank Math
Is Rank Math free?
Yes, the core plugin is free with no time limit. It covers titles, the sitemap, structured data, redirects and the connection to Search Console. The paid plans mainly add rank tracking and client site management.
Rank Math or Yoast SEO?
Both do the basics very well. Rank Math offers more in its free version, including redirects and a wider range of structured data; Yoast SEO is more widespread and more understated. You can switch from one to the other by importing your settings.
Can I use Rank Math PRO on my clients’ sites?
No. The PRO plan is limited to sites you own. For client sites, you need the Business or Agency plan.
Should I aim for a 100/100 score?
No. The score measures how well a page follows a list of criteria, not the quality of the text or its ability to rank. It works as a reminder; useful, well-structured content matters more than a perfect score.
Does Rank Math work without WordPress?
No. It is a plugin for self-hosted WordPress sites; on WordPress.com, it requires a plan that allows plugins.
