lemlist: automate your outreach by email and on LinkedIn

Good tool

lemlist is for reaching new customers without spending your days copying and pasting messages. You find or import a list of prospects, write a sequence of personalized emails, follow-ups and, if needed, LinkedIn invitations or calls, then the tool runs the whole thing and stops as soon as the person replies. With deliverability management built in, it is one of the most widely used cold outreach platforms among sales teams, startup founders and lead generation agencies.

What is lemlist?

lemlist is online software for outbound sales prospecting. Work is organized into campaigns. Each one starts from a contact list, imported from a file or a CRM, or built from the database of more than 650 million contacts the publisher provides, along with a tool for finding email addresses and phone numbers. Then comes the sequence: a series of steps spaced out over time, with conditions (follow up if the message wasn’t opened, switch to LinkedIn if the address can’t be found…). Messages are personalized with variables, conditional text and even images showing the prospect’s name, the tool’s original signature feature.

Around that core, lemlist has grown a lot. The Multichannel plan adds LinkedIn automation (profile visits, invitations, written or voice messages), a built-in phone, SMS and, as an add-on, WhatsApp. A unified inbox gathers replies from every channel. On the deliverability side, the lemwarm warm-up tool is included, along with rotation across several sending inboxes, a DNS setup test and alerts. The latest versions bet on AI, with lemAgent, an assistant that researches accounts, detects buying signals and writes messages, as well as an MCP server to run lemlist from an AI assistant.

The publisher, lempire SAS, is a French company based in Paris. lemlist was launched in 2018 by Guillaume Moubeche and two partners; the product is now led by Charles Tenot. The company grew without raising primary funding, betting on content and its founder’s presence on LinkedIn, before opening its capital in 2021 to the Expedition Growth Capital fund, which took a minority stake by buying existing shares. It has also launched or acquired other tools for salespeople and creators, such as lemcal and Taplio. The interface is available in English, French, German and Spanish.

What is lemlist used for?

  • Find prospects

a database of more than 650 million contacts to filter by job title, industry or company size, with email and phone number lookup and verification.

  • Write personalized emails

variables, conditional paragraphs and personalized images so every message looks handwritten; save the images for follow-ups, since plain text gets past filters better on first contact.

  • Schedule your follow-ups

multi-step sequences with conditions that stop automatically as soon as a prospect replies.

  • Prospect beyond email

LinkedIn profile visits, invitations and messages, calls, SMS and WhatsApp in the same sequence, with the Multichannel plan.

  • Protect your deliverability

inbox warm-up with lemwarm, sender rotation, a DNS setup test and alerts when things drift.

  • Hand part of the work to AI

lemAgent researches accounts, spots buying signals, writes messages and sorts replies by intent.

  • Connect your tools

sync with HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive, Zapier, Make and n8n connections, an API and an MCP server.

  • Track your campaigns

stats for every campaign and every step, opens, clicks and replies, plus custom reports.

lemlist review

Good tool

A team that prospects every day will find almost everything it needs in lemlist. Sequences are easy to build, personalization goes much further than a first-name variable, and mixing email, LinkedIn and phone in the same flow reflects how outreach actually works today. Its real strength, though, is behind the scenes: inbox warm-up, sender rotation and alerts are included as standard, where many tools charge extra for them.

A word of caution about open-based flows: since Apple Mail Privacy Protection and Gmail’s image proxies, open rates don’t mean much anymore, and the tracking pixel itself hurts the deliverability of a cold email. It is better to trigger follow-ups on replies or clicks, and to set up a custom tracking domain if you insist on tracking.

The contact database calls for more care. It helps you get a list started, but its data ages like that of every database on the market: people who have changed jobs, addresses that bounce, incomplete numbers. Verify a list before sending to it, all the more since bounces directly hurt your domain’s reputation.

Keep a close eye on the bill, too. The Email plan is reasonable, with unlimited users; the Multichannel plan, on the other hand, is priced per user, and data credits, buying signals, WhatsApp or extra sending inboxes add up fast. Take the time to read the renewal terms before committing to a yearly plan. As for getting started, simple campaigns launch in an hour, but conditional multichannel flows take real time to learn. Support, for its part, has a good reputation.

The tool doesn’t settle the legal side for you. In B2B, French law allows prospecting emails without prior consent, as long as they relate to the person’s job, the person knows where their data comes from and can easily unsubscribe; reaching consumers by email, SMS or WhatsApp, by contrast, requires their consent.

Gmail and Yahoo require bulk senders (from 5,000 messages a day to Gmail) to have an authenticated domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), a one-click unsubscribe link and a spam complaint rate kept below 0.3% in Postmaster Tools. lemlist, for its part, requires an unsubscribe link in every campaign and can limit or suspend an account that exceeds its bounce and complaint thresholds. Finally, LinkedIn automation isn’t allowed by the network’s terms of service: it is still possible, but at a measured pace and knowing the risk of having the account restricted.

Strengths

  • Rich sequences that are easy to build, with conditions and an automatic stop on reply.
  • Advanced personalization, down to images with the prospect’s name.
  • Email, LinkedIn, calls and SMS in the same flow and the same inbox.
  • Deliverability tools included in every plan, warm-up included.
  • Unlimited users and sending inboxes on the Email plan.
  • A French publisher subject to the GDPR, with an interface in English, French, German and Spanish.

Weaknesses

  • No free plan beyond the 14-day trial.
  • A bill that climbs fast with Multichannel: per-user pricing, plus credits and add-ons.
  • Uneven contact data, to verify before every send.
  • A long learning curve for advanced multichannel flows.
  • LinkedIn automation that breaks the network’s rules, with a risk to your account.
  • An account limited or suspended, with no refund, if complaints pile up.

Is lemlist worth it?

Yes, if outbound is a full-fledged acquisition channel for you: a sales team that reaches out every week, a founder looking for their first B2B customers, an agency running campaigns on behalf of its clients. The tool saves a huge amount of time and protects the reputation of your sending inboxes better than most. The Email plan is plenty to get started; Multichannel makes sense when LinkedIn and phone really matter in your sales.

Not necessarily, if you send a newsletter or emails to customers who have opted in: email marketing software like Brevo or Mailchimp is built for that. The same goes if you only reach out to a few dozen contacts a month, or if you target consumers. Among the alternatives, Instantly focuses on sending email at very high volume, Apollo pairs a large contact database with sequences, while La Growth Machine and Waalaxy, two French tools, are centered on LinkedIn.

How much does lemlist cost?

lemlist is sold by subscription, billed monthly, quarterly (10% off) or yearly (20% off). The Email plan is chosen by the number of emails sent per month, with unlimited users, while the Multichannel plan is priced per user. Contact data and buying signals are sold separately, as credits.

These volumes aren’t sent from a single inbox: in cold outreach, each sending inbox stays at a few dozen messages a day, or Gmail and Outlook block it. Reaching 50,000 emails a month therefore means dozens of inboxes spread across several secondary domains, which you have to buy, authenticate and warm up, on top of the subscription.

FAQ

Answers to questions about lemlist

Is lemlist free?

No. There is no permanent free version, only a 14-day trial that gives access to the Multichannel plan’s features, except built-in calling, with 200 data credits. After that, subscriptions start at $69 a month, or $55 a month billed yearly.

Is cold emailing with lemlist legal?

Yes, within a clear framework. In B2B, French law allows prospecting emails without prior consent if the message relates to the person’s job, they are told where their data comes from and they can unsubscribe easily. Consumers must give their consent first. lemlist requires an unsubscribe link in every campaign.

Do you need a dedicated domain to send with lemlist?

It is strongly recommended for cold outreach: a secondary domain, properly authenticated (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and warmed up, keeps the reputation of the company’s main domain out of harm’s way. lemlist includes warm-up and even lets you buy domains from within the app.

What is the difference between the Email plan and the Multichannel plan?

The Email plan is priced by the volume of emails sent per month, with unlimited users and sending inboxes. Multichannel is priced per user and adds LinkedIn automation, calls, SMS and, as an add-on, WhatsApp, with unlimited sending.

Is lemlist a French company?

Yes. lemlist is published by lempire SAS, a company based in Paris, founded by Guillaume Moubeche and his partners, which launched the tool in 2018.
