AnswerThePublic: find the questions your audience asks and turn them into content
Worth a look
Type in a topic, “dog insurance” or “e-bike,” and AnswerThePublic lays out everything people usually search for around it: questions that start with “how,” “why” or “how much,” comparisons, phrases built with “for” or “without.” The results, pulled from the suggestions of Google, Bing, Amazon, YouTube and TikTok, appear as large visual wheels or as exportable lists. Writers, SEOs and marketing teams have relied on it for years to find article ideas and answer the real questions of their audience, and its question wheel has become a familiar sight in content recommendations.
What is AnswerThePublic?
Behind its colorful visuals, AnswerThePublic relies on a very simple piece of data: the suggestions that pop up as soon as you start typing a search. The tool queries these autocomplete suggestions for a given keyword, country and language, then sorts them into families: questions (who, what, how, why…), prepositions, comparisons (“vs,” “or”), alphabetical lists and related terms. Long limited to Google and Bing, it now covers Amazon, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, as well as ChatGPT and Gemini, for which it shows prompt suggestions and the tone of the answers. Paid accounts add an estimated search volume and cost per click for each phrase, weekly alerts on new suggestions for a topic, comparisons of results over time and, more recently, an AI article-writing module, Content Studio, that publishes straight to WordPress.
The tool was launched in 2014 in the United Kingdom by Gary Preston, Jack Hubbard and Jim Jensen. Gary Preston, who also created CoverageBook, a reporting tool for public relations, turned it into something of a phenomenon in the content world thanks to its original presentation. In 2022, the founders sold it to NP Digital, Neil Patel’s marketing agency, which already owned the SEO tool Ubersuggest; the price was not disclosed. AnswerThePublic still belongs to the group, and the site is operated by Answer the Public Ltd, a company registered in England.

AnswerThePublic review
Worth a look
As a source of inspiration, AnswerThePublic is still pleasant to use. One search brings up phrasings you would never have thought of, and that is often where the best long-tail topics or FAQ questions come from. The question wheels also speak to clients: more than one agency uses them to illustrate a content recommendation.
You do need to know what you are looking at, though. Autocomplete suggestions show what people type, not how often they type it: the volumes and costs per click displayed are estimates from third-party data providers, to be cross-checked with Google’s Search Console or Keyword Planner. And the raw material is nothing exclusive: you can also get it, more slowly, from the search bar itself or from similar tools. The value of the tool lies mostly in its presentation and the time it saves, a little less so now that most SEO suites offer their own “questions” tab.
Since its acquisition by NP Digital, AnswerThePublic has grown mainly on the artificial intelligence side, with ChatGPT and Gemini answers and an automated writing module. The former add a useful angle for anyone interested in visibility in AI assistants; the latter is just one more article generator, whose output needs a careful edit.
Billing deserves more attention than the tool itself. The seven-day free trial turns into a paid subscription if you don’t cancel in time, annual plans are pushed with one limited-time promotion after another, and no purchase is refunded. Before subscribing, it is wise to note the end date of the trial and double-check the plan you picked.
Strengths
- Dozens of real questions and phrasings from a single search.
- A clear visual presentation that is easy to show a client or a team.
- Broad coverage: search engines, Amazon, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and AI assistants.
- A free version that is enough for an occasional need.
- An inexpensive entry plan, especially when paid yearly.
Weaknesses
- Estimated volumes and costs per click, to be checked in Google’s tools.
- Raw material, search engine suggestions, that is available elsewhere for free.
- A quota of 100 to 300 searches a month depending on the plan.
- A trial that rolls into a paid subscription, and purchases that are never refunded.
- A dashboard that can be slow, and AI-generated articles of uneven quality.
Is AnswerThePublic worth it?
Yes, if you produce content on a regular basis, blog posts, videos, FAQ pages, and want a quick way to start from your audience’s real questions. The Starter plan, cheap when paid yearly, suits a writer or a consultant who also wants to present their research in a compelling way.
Not necessarily, if you already have an SEO suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, which offer their own question lists with more detailed volumes, or if your need is only occasional: the three free searches a day will then be enough. Among the alternatives, AlsoAsked explores Google’s “People also ask” questions, Ubersuggest, from the same publisher, combines keyword ideas and suggestions, and Search Console shows, for free, the questions that already bring visitors to your site.
How much does AnswerThePublic cost?
AnswerThePublic can be tried for free, with one search a day without an account and three with a free account. The three paid plans, billed monthly or yearly, differ mainly in the number of monthly searches, users and AI-generated articles.
| Plan | Per month | Per month, billed yearly | Searches and users | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | — | 3 searches a day with an account, partial data | Looking for an idea now and then |
| Starter | $20 | $10 | 100 searches a month, 1 user | Writers, consultants, small businesses |
| Growth | $99 | $49.50 | 200 searches a month, 3 users | Small marketing or content teams |
| Business | $199 | $99.50 | 300 searches a month, 10 users | Agencies and teams handling several brands |
| Custom | Custom pricing | Users and limits on request | Large teams | |

FAQ
Answers to questions about AnswerThePublic
Is AnswerThePublic free?
Partly. Without an account you get one search a day, and three with a free account, but with incomplete data. Paid plans start at $20 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly during the current offer.
Who owns AnswerThePublic?
The tool, created in 2014 in the United Kingdom by Gary Preston, Jack Hubbard and Jim Jensen, was bought in 2022 by NP Digital, Neil Patel’s marketing agency, which also owns Ubersuggest. It is still part of the group.
Where does AnswerThePublic get its data?
From the autocomplete suggestions of Google, Bing, Amazon, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, and from ChatGPT and Gemini answers. Search volumes and costs per click are estimates supplied by data providers, not exact figures.
Can I get a refund on a subscription?
No. Only the 7-day free trial, available once and on monthly plans, lets you test without paying; you have to cancel it before it ends to avoid being charged. Other purchases are non-refundable.
AnswerThePublic or AlsoAsked?
AnswerThePublic starts from the autocomplete suggestions of several platforms and presents them as visual wheels; AlsoAsked focuses on Google’s “People also ask” questions and shows how they connect. The former is better for casting a wide net, the latter for structuring an article around a single question.
