NeverBounce: clean your email list before a campaign

Worth a look

Before sending a newsletter or an outreach sequence to thousands of contacts, it pays to know how many addresses are dead. NeverBounce answers that question: you hand it a file or a connection to your CRM, and it sorts every address into valid, invalid and questionable, so only the good ones go out in the campaign. It also checks addresses as they are entered, in a sign-up form for example. Marketing and sales teams working with large databases most often weigh it against ZeroBounce, its direct competitor.

What is NeverBounce?

NeverBounce is an online service that checks whether an email address exists and can receive messages, without ever sending one. It checks the syntax, the domain and whether there is a mail server, then queries that server to find out whether the mailbox is active. Each address comes back with a status: valid, invalid, disposable, “catch-all” (a domain that accepts everything, impossible to call) or unknown. Duplicates and syntax errors are removed along the way, and some common typos, such as “gmai” for “gmail”, are corrected.

There are three ways to use it. Bulk cleaning works by dropping a CSV file into the dashboard: a list of 10,000 addresses is processed in a few minutes, and a free analysis first estimates the bounce rate before you buy anything. Real-time verification goes through the API, a JavaScript widget or a webhook, plugged into a form or an app. Finally, Sync connects NeverBounce to your CRM or email marketing tool (HubSpot, Mailchimp, Zapier, n8n and more than 80 integrations) to clean lists continuously, with no manual export. The monthly plan now adds AI-assisted prospecting features, such as contact scoring.

The service was founded in 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Brad Owen and a team of digital marketers fed up with slow, inaccurate verifiers. In March 2019, DiscoverOrg, an American provider of B2B sales data, bought it for an undisclosed amount, a few weeks after acquiring ZoomInfo, whose name it then took. NeverBounce therefore now belongs to ZoomInfo, which also uses it to verify the addresses in its own contact database while continuing to sell it as a standalone product. The company claims more than 150,000 customers and more than a billion addresses cleaned.

What is NeverBounce used for?

  • Clean an existing list

you upload a CSV file and get every address back with a status, with invalid and disposable ones ready to be removed.

  • Reduce bounces

by only writing to active mailboxes, you avoid the bounce spikes that damage your domain’s reputation with mailbox providers.

  • Size up a list before you pay

the free analysis estimates the share of problem addresses, so you know whether a full cleaning is worth it.

  • Filter addresses at sign-up

the API, the JavaScript widget or a webhook block fake addresses right in your sign-up or contact form.

  • Keep your CRM clean continuously

with Sync, contacts in your CRM or email marketing tool are re-verified automatically, with no manual export.

  • Prioritize your contacts

the Growth plan adds the company name drawn from the address, a conversion score and prospect suggestions.

NeverBounce review

Worth a look

NeverBounce is one of the veterans of email verification, and it shows in how easy it is to use: a list dropped into the dashboard comes back sorted a few minutes later, with no particular setup. For a one-off cleanup before a big campaign, or to filter sign-ups from a form, it does its job very well, with a catalog of integrations that saves you from improvising. Its natural audience is B2B marketing and sales teams juggling tens of thousands of contacts, who often hesitate between it and ZeroBounce.

A verifier can’t promise the impossible, and NeverBounce is no exception. It confirms that a mailbox exists at the time of the check, not that your messages will land in the inbox. And with “catch-all” domains, which are very common in companies, it can’t make the call, any more than it can with servers that refuse to answer verification requests, as some mailbox providers and spam gateways do: on some B2B lists, a large share of addresses stays labeled catch-all or unknown, and that is often where the comparison with its competitors plays out. Running the same sample through two services before committing to a large volume quickly separates the contenders.

The business model also calls for a few reservations. The per-credit price gets very low at high volume, but it’s steep for a small list, there is no lasting free plan, and purchased credits expire twelve months after purchase, a rule introduced after the fact that left some customers bitter. Customer service, long a selling point for the brand, has lost some of its shine since the integration into ZoomInfo: hard-won refunds, slow or automated replies. Finally, the monthly plan is drifting toward AI-assisted prospecting, useful for some sales teams, unnecessary if you just want to clean a list.

All in all, a solid, well-integrated tool that gets the job done at high volume, but one you should buy as close to your actual needs as possible, knowing its credits don’t sit around forever.

Strengths

  • Fast, simple list cleaning, with no technical skills needed.
  • More than 80 integrations, including HubSpot, Mailchimp, Zapier and n8n.
  • Real-time verification through API, widget or webhook.
  • A very low cost per address at high volume.
  • A free list analysis before you buy anything, with duplicates removed at no charge.

Weaknesses

  • No lasting free plan, only test credits.
  • Credits that expire 12 months after purchase.
  • A share of catch-all or unknown addresses left without a verdict.
  • Criticized customer service and refund policy.
  • Prices in US dollars only, and a monthly plan pulled toward AI prospecting.

Is NeverBounce worth it?

Yes, if you manage large contact files, especially in B2B, and want reliable cleaning plugged straight into your CRM or email marketing tool. It’s also a good choice for filtering addresses at the point of entry on a form, thanks to the API and the widget. The higher the volume, the more attractive the price per address becomes.

Not necessarily, if you only have a few hundred addresses to check now and then: with no lasting free plan and credits that expire, you’ll pay a lot per contact. The same caveat applies if what you really want to know is why your emails land in spam: a clean list fixes neither domain authentication nor sender reputation, which you can check with Mail-tester or Google Postmaster Tools.

Alternatives: ZeroBounce, its most direct competitor, offers a small free monthly allowance and extra deliverability tools; Kickbox, Bouncer and Emailable target the same use with their own credit-based pricing, and MillionVerifier focuses on very large volumes at a low price. Many email marketing tools also include basic verification, enough for small lists. One point not to overlook for a company in Europe: sending an address file to NeverBounce means handing personal data to an American processor, a subsidiary of ZoomInfo. You need to sign its data processing agreement and be able to justify how the addresses were collected, because cleaning doesn’t make a purchased list, or one built without consent, lawful. Those who want to keep data in Europe can look at Bouncer, hosted in the European Union, or Captain Verify, a French service.

How much does NeverBounce cost?

NeverBounce is paid in dollars, in two ways: by credit, one credit per verified address, with no subscription, or through a monthly plan for teams that verify continuously. The credit price drops as you buy more, from $0.008 for 1,000 credits down to $0.002 for the largest volumes. Large accounts go through a quote.

FAQ

Answers to questions about NeverBounce

Is NeverBounce free?

No. It offers test credits and a free list analysis when you sign up, as well as checking three addresses on its website, but regular use is paid, starting at $8 per 1,000 verifications.

Do NeverBounce credits expire?

Yes. Credits bought on a pay-as-you-go basis are valid for 12 months after purchase. It’s best to buy as close as possible to the volume you actually expect.

What should I do with addresses marked catch-all?

A catch-all domain accepts every message, whether the mailbox exists or not, so no verifier can confirm the address. You can send to them separately, in small batches, while watching bounces, or set them aside if your sending domain’s reputation is fragile.

Who owns NeverBounce?

ZoomInfo. NeverBounce, founded in 2014 in Cleveland by Brad Owen, was bought in March 2019 by DiscoverOrg, which later took the name ZoomInfo after acquiring that company.

NeverBounce or ZeroBounce?

Both services verify addresses the same way and are paid for with credits. ZeroBounce adds a small free monthly allowance and deliverability tools; NeverBounce relies on its integrations and its continuous cleaning with Sync. On a B2B list, how catch-all addresses are handled often makes the difference: run the same sample through both.
